What have Emojis got to do with Neuroinclusion?


Emojis love or hate em? 


Truth is, whatever camp you land in research shows they can have a fantastic impact on online communication, especially for neurodivergent people. I can personally vouch for this, but I am team ‘love em’ so I decided to do a wee bit of investigating and garner some authentic evidence rather than just personal opinion! 


Here’s what I found: 


Emojis can make messages clearer, lift moods, and help people feel more connected. 


Research shows that emojis can help to reduce ambiguity and boost positive feelings, often bringing a positive vibe to conversations. 


They can make online chats more enjoyable and improve overall mood, and they play a crucial role in non-verbal communication, helping to convey emotions and making messages easier to understand (that all-important context!).


Plain text can often be misread due to the individual perspective of the reader, which can be particularly triggering for neurodivergent individuals.


Without the visual and emotional cues provided by face-to-face interaction, messages can seem harsher or more ambiguous than intended. (We've all been there right?).


This is where emojis come in, adding much-needed context and emotional clarity. 


A simple smile emoji, for example, can be enough to prevent feelings of rejection sensitivity dysphoria (RSD) and maintain a positive interaction.


I am a bugger for this both when writing text and reading it, hence why I’m now an emoji queen!! 




Using emojis in both casual and professional settings can significantly enhance communication and promote neuroinclusive practices. 


In casual chats, they add a personal touch, making conversations more fun and relatable. They convey that all important tone and emotion that might be missing from plain text, helping to avoid unnecessary misunderstandings and ultimately build stronger connections.


In professional settings, emojis can help humanise interactions, especially in remote or text-heavy communications. 


They can soften the tone of a message, express appreciation or enthusiasm, and create a more positive and collaborative atmosphere. 


By incorporating emojis, organisations can foster an inclusive environment where all team members feel more relaxed, understood and more importantly valued. 


Emojis really can bridge gaps in understanding and ensure that the emotional intent behind messages is clear, making them an unbelievably valuable tool in promoting neuroinclusive practices.


Busting the Myth of Unprofessionalism!


There’s a common misconception that using emojis in the workplace is unprofessional. 


However, this myth is rapidly being disproven as more businesses recognise the value of clear and emotionally intelligent communication. 


In fact, studies have shown that well-placed emojis can enhance clarity and rapport in professional settings, helping to convey friendliness and reduce misunderstandings. 


Far from being unprofessional, emojis can be a powerful tool to foster a more inclusive and positive work environment.


Promoting neuroinclusive practices means recognising and accommodating the diverse ways people communicate and interact. 


By using emojis thoughtfully, we can create a more supportive and inclusive environment for everyone. 


This small change can make a significant difference, particularly for neurodivergent individuals who may find plain text communication challenging or stressful.


So, whether you're sending a quick text to a friend or composing an email to a colleague, consider adding a few well-placed emojis. 


Encourage your colleagues and friends to do the same, and watch as your communication becomes more engaging and inclusive. 


Remember though 'One Size Fits None!" therefore if you are unsure just ask! By the same token if you don't like the use of emojis in your communication style then say so! #CommunicationIsTheKey
